Inlandsbanan trains may be sold after remaining unused since 2019

Inlandsbanan AB is considering renting out or selling five new trains that have remained unused in regular service since their purchase in 2019. The fleet, which cost 170 million SEK to acquire and adapt for the route between Mora and Gällivare, has largely sat idle on a siding in Brunflo.

While a demonstration trip was conducted between Östersund and Mora in the summer of 2019, the trains have not entered commercial passenger service. Delays during their adaptation process in Poland were attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

Otto Nilsson, CEO of Inlandsbanan AB, stated that the company cannot operate public transport independently, as the decision to run services rests with the regional authorities. While the company is searching for ways to put the trains into operation, Nilsson noted that if no solution is found, selling them—potentially to buyers in Europe—remains an option. Currently, Region Jämtland Härjedalen does not see the immediate conditions necessary for passenger traffic along the line.
