Inmate Commits Suicide at Béthune Detention Center in France

A 28‑year‑old detainee in provisional custody at the Maison d'arrêt de Béthune took his own life on Sunday. The deputy prosecutor, Émilie Droit, confirmed the suicide and noted that the inmate was awaiting trial on 12 August for "injuries involontaires par conducteur" with aggravating circumstances.

The detainee had caused a June motorcycle collision with a van in Calonne‑Ricouart, severely injuring his three‑year‑old son who was also on the bike. The incident led to his provisional detention. Prisoner suicides are reported as occurring regularly, with the most recent prior case in April involving a repeat traffic offender.
