Inmate dies after prison fight at Aguaruto Penitentiary in Culiacán, Mexico

A violent altercation broke out inside the Aguaruto Prison in Culiacán, Sinaloa, on the evening of 22 July 2026. Custody staff, aided by the State Preventive Police, quickly contained the disturbance, while the National Guard and Mexican Army established a security perimeter around the facility.

One inmate was injured during the clash and, while being transported for emergency medical care, succumbed to injuries caused by a bladed weapon. The Sinaloa Secretary of Public Safety reported the incident to the State Attorney General’s Office, which has begun a forensic investigation. Families of the deceased inmate are being contacted, and prison authorities are conducting further searches for contraband and maintaining heightened surveillance.

The incident is being treated as a criminal matter, with ongoing investigations to identify the cause of the weapon’s presence and to prevent similar episodes.
