Prato prison homicide of Nigerian detainee sparks investigation

A 32‑year‑old Nigerian detainee was found dead on the night of 5 August in the Dogaia prison in Prato. The victim was in cell 171 of the seventh section, a unit for inmates convicted of sexual offences, sharing the space with three other prisoners. A violent altercation preceded the death; the autopsy revealed a cranial trauma caused by a blunt object, an upper‑lip bruise and a lacerated wound on the left forehead, with nasal bleeding.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Prato, led by Luca Tescaroli, opened an investigation for pre‑meditated homicide. Police, the prison guard service and forensic experts are assisting in reconstructing the incident and identifying the aggressor. Tescaroli highlighted that the killing is part of a continuing “wave of violence” in the overcrowded facility, which holds about 640 inmates in a space designed for far fewer, with many cells housing up to four prisoners.

The case prompted political reactions. Forza Italia’s deputy secretary Deborah Bergamini and Democratic Party regional secretary Emiliano Fossi called for urgent reforms of Italy’s penitentiary system, citing overcrowding, safety and dignity concerns. Bergamini announced a parliamentary fact‑finding mission and a planned visit to the prison. The incident has revived debate over prison conditions and the need for structural interventions.
