Inönü University reaches 130 pediatric bone marrow transplants

The Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Center at İnönü University Turgut Özal Medical Center in Malatya has reached a milestone of 130 successful transplants in nine years.

Prof. Dr. Arzu Özşahin Akyay, the center's responsible physician, noted that success rates are above the European average. The center primarily treats patients with thalassemia major, but also manages high-risk leukemia, bone marrow failure, certain lymphomas, congenital immune system disorders, and metabolic diseases.

The transplant process begins with searching for suitable donors among immediate family members. If no match is found, the center utilizes TÜRKÖK or international tissue banks to locate compatible donors.
