Innovations target CO2 reduction in cement production
Researchers and industrial players are developing new methods to reduce the carbon footprint of cement production, which currently accounts for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions.
At the CEMEX Santa Rosa plant in Colombia, studies on LC3 cement—which utilizes calcined clay to partially substitute clinker—show that this formulation meets quality standards while potentially reducing CO2 emissions by up to 32% and the clinker factor by 26.3%.
In the United States, researchers from Stanford University are exploring electric plasma heating as a method to produce cement without burning fossil fuels. This approach aims to address the significant emissions generated by the high temperatures required to fuse limestone and clay into clinker.
