Turin Hospital Performs First Human Macula Transplant, Restores Vision

Surgeons at the Molinette Hospital in Turin, Italy, led by Professor Michele Reibaldi and Professor Vincenzo Sarnicola, carried out the world’s first macula transplant. Using healthy tissue from the patient’s blind left eye—including cornea, sclera, conjunctiva and the central retina (macula)—they transplanted it into the right eye of 67‑year‑old Elena, who had been completely blind in that eye for five years after a traffic accident. The six‑hour operation was described as a “biological transplant.” Post‑operative checks showed a gradual return of sight: first light, then black‑and‑white images, and finally full colour perception, allowing Elena to recognize her son’s face and her guide dog. Doctors say the technique could open new treatment options for cases previously deemed untreatable, though long‑term monitoring continues.
