Innovative power-to-heat system simulates seasonal PV energy storage

A master's thesis from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, explores an innovative power-to-heat system designed for the seasonal storage of photovoltaic (PV) electricity.

The research simulates a process where sewage sludge is dried using a solar dryer supported by a heat pump. This system allows PV electricity to be stored within the dried sludge, enabling the recovery of both energy and phosphorus through mono-incineration.

Simulation results across five different site concepts indicate that the process is technically viable. The study found that more than 60% of the PV energy produced throughout the year can be utilized for sewage sludge drying during a six-month operating period, effectively shifting energy use seasonally. Optimal configurations involve specific dryer surface areas combined with small to medium-sized heat pumps.
