Inova utilizes minimally invasive technology for outpatient spine surgery
Advancements in minimally invasive spine surgery technology are enabling more complex procedures to be performed in outpatient settings. According to Tan Chen, MD, a spine surgeon at Inova, these technological leaps allow for not only smaller procedures like laminectomies but also larger surgeries such as fusions and deformity corrections to occur outside traditional hospital environments.
Key innovations driving this shift include modern imaging and navigation tools that provide real-time, detailed views of spinal anatomy, increasing precision during the placement of hardware. Additionally, the development of expandable implant technology allows compact implants to be inserted through small incisions and then expanded once in position, providing the stability of traditional large-scale implants with the benefits of reduced tissue trauma and faster recovery times.
