Sergio Urribarri transferred to Gualeguaychú prison
Former Entre Ríos Governor Sergio Urribarri, along with former Minister Pedro Báez and Juan Pablo Aguilera, have been definitively transferred to the Unidad Penal N.º 9 'El Potrero' in Gualeguaychú to serve their sentences. The move follows a ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, which dismissed their extraordinary federal appeal regarding corruption convictions issued in 2022.
The convictions stem from a decade-long investigation into a corruption scheme involving the diversion of public funds through fraudulent advertising contracts between 2008 and 2018. Urribarri was sentenced to eight years for embezzlement and incompatible negotiations with public office, while Báez and Aguilera received six years and six months each. Urribarri is expected to remain in custody until July 2034.
In separate regional developments, authorities in Ecuador conducted a massive security operation, transferring 106 inmates to the Guayas Regional Prison to disrupt organized crime activities. Meanwhile, in Colombia, the prison agency Inpec has begun relocating high-profile inmates from police and military facilities to standard correctional centers to end 'VIP' treatment in non-penitentiary locations.
