INPEC official Diego Acevedo Garzón assassinated in Girón

Diego Acevedo Garzón, a prison guard (dragoneante) for the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC), was assassinated by gunmen on Wednesday night in Girón, Santander. The attack occurred inside his commercial establishment, Sabor Argentino, located in the Santa Cruz neighborhood near the Gallineral sector.

Acevedo Garzón sustained a gunshot wound and died while being transported to a medical center. Preliminary reports suggest he may have been receiving threats for approximately two months. Following the incident, the Governor of Santander, Juvenal Díaz Mateus, rejected the murder and convened a metropolitan security council to coordinate a response.

This killing marks the second INPEC official murdered within three days, following the death of Bryan Rangel Saavedra in Cúcuta. The recent violence against prison staff has raised concerns regarding the security of personnel working within the country's correctional system. Authorities are currently investigating the motive and the identity of the perpetrators.
