Inpex Charged in Australia Over Ichthys LNG Emissions Under‑Reporting

The Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority in Australia has filed court charges against Japanese energy company Inpex for alleged breaches of its environmental licence at the Ichthys liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant near Darwin. The charges allege that Inpex under‑reported benzene and toluene emissions for the period 2019‑2024.

The action follows an October disclosure by Inpex that it had significantly under‑reported emissions, prompting a regulatory review of both the Ichthys LNG and Santos’ Darwin LNG facilities. The review produced 23 recommendations, including the installation of continuous emissions‑monitoring equipment, and the regulator plans to draft licence amendments in August. Climate group Environment Centre NT hailed the charges as a “massive win for Darwin residents,” with activist Bree Ahrens saying Inpex is finally being held accountable for the toxic pollution.

Inpex has not responded to requests for comment.
