INPS implements pension contribution recovery for serious illness leave

The Italian Social Security Institute (INPS) has launched a process for workers to recover pension contributions for months spent on extra leave due to serious illnesses. Under Law no. 106/2025, workers suffering from oncological diseases or chronic, disabling, or rare conditions with a disability rating of at least 74% are eligible.

Starting August 9, 2025, eligible individuals can recover up to 24 months of leave, which may be taken in a single block or in installments. The cost of this recovery is borne by the worker, who can choose between redeeming the period or making voluntary contributions. While the upfront cost can be significant—for example, approximately 19,800 euros for two years based on a 30,000 euro salary—the payments are tax-deductible from income.

These recovered months count toward both the right to receive a pension and the calculation of the pension amount. The application process is open to current employees, the unemployed, pensioners, and survivors.
