INPS warns of AI-driven identity theft and SMS scams

INPS has issued warnings regarding an increase in sophisticated digital fraud attempts targeting users, particularly pensioners in Sicily. Scammers are using fake SMS messages that mimic the official branding and logo of the Institute to steal personal data, identity documents, and payment information.

A new and particularly deceptive method identified by Cert-Agid involves the use of artificial intelligence. This technology is used to analyze uploaded images, such as selfies or identity documents, to make the fraudulent verification process appear more legitimate and convincing to victims. These attacks direct users to counterfeit websites designed to look like the official portal, where they are prompted to provide sensitive information including payroll details and credit card data.

INPS advises users to regularly monitor their contact information and email folders, including spam, for any unauthorized changes. The Institute emphasizes that it never sends SMS or emails containing links to confirm personal data, transmit documents, or receive refunds. Official communications containing links are strictly limited to user satisfaction surveys. Users are urged to verify that all registered contact details are accurate and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
