Inquest finds Mounjaro did not cause death of Caroline Savage

An inquest at Norfolk Coroner’s Court has concluded that the death of 73-year-old Caroline Savage was not caused by the weight-loss medication Mounjaro. Mrs. Savage died in October 2024 from faecal peritonitis resulting from perforated sigmoid diverticular disease.

The proceedings revealed that Mrs. Savage was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital following severe abdominal pain. Due to hospital overcrowding, she remained in an ambulance for much of her time at the facility. While she received pain relief and an ultrasound, the acute abdominal pathway was not activated, and she was not referred for a mandatory CT scan.

Coroner Yvonne Blake noted that Mrs. Savage was discharged approximately five hours after arrival without a final set of clinical observations being performed. Although her discharge summary noted potential side effects of medication, the coroner found no established evidence linking her death to the use of Mounjaro.
