Colombia suspends news programming for 20 Peace Broadcasters
The Colombian government, under President Abelardo de la Espriella, has ordered the suspension of news and opinion programming for 20 Peace Broadcasters. These stations, established as part of the 2016 Peace Agreement, were designed to provide information and promote reconciliation in regions heavily impacted by armed conflict.
Inravisión, the public media entity, has replaced the local informative content with centralized musical programming broadcast from Bogotá. The government justifies this restructuring as a necessary step to transform the public media system into a plural and independent entity, claiming the previous news segments functioned as a propaganda apparatus.
Human rights organizations, including the Defensoría del Pueblo and the Foundation for Freedom of the Press (FLIP), have condemned the move. They argue the decision violates constitutional rights to information and undermines the state's commitments to the Peace Agreement. The suspension affects over 460,000 people in 11 municipalities, including Bojayá and El Tambo. In response to the measure, the Colombian Congress has called for a political control debate to address the impact on community access to information.
