INS Drakon submarine arrives in Haifa, marking Israeli naval expansion
The INS Drakon, the largest and heaviest submarine in the Israeli Navy, has arrived at the port of Haifa following a multi-week voyage from Kiel, Germany. Built by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), the vessel is the sixth and final submarine of the Dolphin-class series.
The arrival of the INS Drakon marks the first major delivery under the Choschen naval modernization plan. According to Israeli General Staff Chief Eyal Zamir, the plan aims to enhance the Navy's ability to operate further from Israel, for longer durations, and with increased firepower. The vessel is approximately 74 meters long, weighs 2,600 tons, and is equipped with ten torpedo tubes.
Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the submarine's arrival serves as a strategic message to regional adversaries, specifically mentioning Tehran. The deployment is part of a broader effort to address increasing maritime threats in the Middle East, including developments in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. Israeli systems are expected to be installed on the submarine over the next two to three months before it reaches full operational status.
