Insect food market in Germany faces consolidation

The insect-based food market in Germany and Europe is experiencing significant consolidation. Despite the European Union classifying insects as novel foods in 2018, a mass market for human consumption has failed to materialize.

Industry experts, including agricultural economist Isabell Weiß from the University of Göttingen, note that the sector has shifted from a boom period (2018–2022) to a period of market cleansing. While there were once between 20 and 30 active companies, fewer than ten remain in the German market.

Many startups have pivoted away from human food products, such as insect-based bars or cereals, due to low consumer demand and high production costs. Companies like Alpha Protein and Entava now focus primarily on the animal feed and terrarium food markets, which serve as the industry's main revenue drivers. The transition from a media-driven hype to a sustainable business model remains a challenge for the sector.
