Insect prevention methods: Chemical repellents and natural alternatives
As warmer weather increases exposure to insects like mosquitoes and ticks, experts highlight various methods for pest prevention. The Illinois Poison Center reports approximately 150 calls annually related to insect repellent exposure, frequently involving children who ingest or misapply products. While most ingestions do not cause significant harm, larger quantities or improper skin application can be toxic.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Regarding DEET, higher concentrations provide longer-lasting protection rather than increased strength.
Alternatively, certain houseplants can serve as natural deterrents. Basil can repel mosquitoes, flies, and whiteflies, while chrysanthemums may deter roaches, ants, ticks, and bedbugs. Lavender is also noted for its ability to deter moths, fleas, flies, and mosquitoes.
