Insect stings cause hundreds of outpatient treatments in Lübeck

Recent data from AOK Nordwest indicates that 375 insured individuals in Lübeck required outpatient treatment for insect stings last year. While most stings result in minor pain, itching, or swelling, medical experts warn that allergic reactions, particularly anaphylactic shock, can be life-threatening. In Germany, an average of 200 people die annually from anaphylactic reactions, though the actual number may be higher due to unidentified causes.

In addition to human health, insect activity poses risks to pets. Wasp stings can be dangerous for dogs, especially if insects are swallowed or if the dog steps on them. Experts recommend preventing dogs from eating open food and avoiding areas with high insect density, such as flower meadows, during peak seasons. If a sting leads to increasing or long-lasting redness, medical attention is advised to prevent secondary infections.
