Insects featured in German museum exhibition and field research

Insects are the focus of recent environmental education and research efforts in Germany. The Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt is hosting an exhibition titled ‘Facettenreiche Insekten’ (Multifaceted Insects) to highlight the beauty and ecological importance of various species, including butterflies, flies, and beetles.

Curator Dr. Daniela Matenaar noted that human food security and broader biodiversity, such as bird populations, depend heavily on insects. The exhibition addresses threats to insect habitats caused by light pollution, pesticides, and industrial agriculture, offering interactive stations for visitors to learn about insect biology.

In Guckheim, the Masgeik-Stiftung and NABU conducted an excursion to study local grasshopper species. Researchers observed that while heat-loving species like the Blue-winged Grasshopper benefit from rising temperatures, many insects remain dependent on moisture-rich habitats, such as flower-rich valley meadows, to thrive.
