Insects provide critical survival tools and medicinal benefits to vertebrates

A study published in ‘Nature Reviews Biodiversity’ highlights the critical role insects play in the survival of vertebrates beyond their function as pollinators or food sources. An international team of scientists synthesized decades of research to demonstrate how insects provide shelter, tools, and medicinal benefits to various species.

Key observations include chimpanzees using insects to treat wounds on themselves and others, and herons utilizing insects as bait for fishing. Additionally, some birds and reptiles use termite mounds as stable incubators for their eggs, while certain desert frogs inhabit ant nests to benefit from a moist microclimate. The research emphasizes that insects are fundamental to complex ecological interactions and the broader stability of wildlife habitats.
