Insects to watch for during August heat

August heat provides ideal conditions for various invertebrates to remain active. Notable species to observe include the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), which is currently in a stage of its life cycle that will eventually lead to a long migration to Mexico.

Another insect to watch for is the hickory tussock moth (Lophocampa caryae). In its larval stage, the caterpillar is characterized by a white body with a dark medial stripe and four dark pencil-like markings.
