Insecurity rises in Mar del Plata neighborhoods

Residents in the Tolosa and Bernardino Rivadaviano neighborhoods of Mar del Plata are facing rising insecurity, leading to extreme self-protection measures and reports of utility theft.

In Tolosa, particularly around the 117 and 528 area, residents have begun installing electric fences to protect their homes after feeling that traditional security measures like alarms, cameras, and gates have proven insufficient. Local neighborhood assemblies have expressed frustration over a lack of institutional response, noting that a planned meeting with officials from the Buenos Aires Ministry of Security failed to materialize. Additionally, there are concerns regarding the reassignment of local police officers to other duties.

In the Bernardino Rivadaviano neighborhood, residents reported a series of thefts involving water, gas, and electricity meters. Security footage captured two individuals on bicycles stealing water meters in the early morning hours, causing local flooding. Neighbors described the perpetrators as recurring thieves who have also targeted the homes of elderly residents.
