Insights on parental leave rights and optimal vacation duration

Recent insights highlight the distinctions between different types of family leave and the psychological benefits of effective vacationing.

Regarding parental rights, there is a distinction between paternity leave and parental leave. Paternity leave is a fixed two-week period, fully paid at 100%, which can be taken anytime until the child turns one year old. In contrast, parental leave consists of 41 to 43 weeks. Since April 2023, a non-transferable 9-week portion of parental leave is reserved specifically for fathers, paid at 70%. This specific portion can be used until the end of the calendar year in which the child turns six.

From a psychological perspective, experts suggest that the quality of rest is more critical than the length of a vacation. Dr. Brittany McGeehan notes that while there is no universal answer, a vacation lasting 7–8 days often provides the best opportunity for a mental reset. The first few days of time off are frequently spent catching up on sleep or disconnecting from work, with true relaxation typically occurring from the third day onward.
