In‑situ cancer and new genetic study illuminate early detection and risk factors

Carcinoma in situ is the earliest stage of cancer, known as stage 0, where abnormal cells remain confined to their place of origin and have not invaded surrounding tissue. Because it does not spread, it can be treated more easily and has a much better prognosis when detected through routine screening or biopsy. Early identification and careful monitoring are crucial for successful outcomes.

A recent study published in *Nature* examined why some smokers develop lung cancer while others do not. Researchers led by Sam Godfrey of Cancer Research UK and Duncan Odom, now at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, used genetically diverse mouse groups exposed to the liver carcinogen diethylnitrosamine. Despite identical exposure, the mice developed tumors along different evolutionary pathways, showing that inherited genetic variations strongly influence how DNA damage translates into cancer. The findings highlight the need to consider individual genetic backgrounds in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment strategies.
