Insta360's Luna Ultra launch sparks patent war with DJI

Insta360 announced the Luna Ultra, a Leica‑co‑engineered handheld gimbal camera featuring a 1" 8K sensor, dual Leica Summicron lenses, AI‑driven tracking and a detachable 2" OLED touchscreen. The device is marketed to mobile filmmakers and creators, with pricing starting at SGD 969 in Singapore and availability worldwide through the Insta360 store, Shopee and Lazada.

Within a day of the launch, DJI filed two patent‑infringement lawsuits claiming the Luna Ultra copies design and utility patents covering its Osmo Pocket line, including subject‑tracking, gimbal control and stabilization technologies. Insta360 responded with two counter‑claims, accusing DJI of infringing its own patents related to the Osmo 360 panoramic camera, Ronin stabilizers and broader location‑based imaging systems. The filings also allege DJI was aware of the disputed patents and declined a licensing offer. Insta360’s founder remarked, “At Insta360, we prefer to let our products do the talking,” underscoring the company’s readiness to fight the dispute publicly.
