Instagram CEO warns algorithm-free feeds would overwhelm users

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has warned that removing algorithms from social media feeds would degrade the user experience. He argued that an algorithm-free environment would lead to users being “overwhelmed” by brand-related content, as the lack of ranking would incentivize frequent posting, favoring companies over individual creators and friends.

These comments follow a proposal by the Australian government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, to allow users the option to opt out of algorithmic feeds in favor of a reverse chronological feed. While Mosseri did not comment directly on the specific Australian policy, he noted that Instagram utilizes various algorithms to determine story frequency, message suggestions, and general feed content.

To address transparency, Instagram has launched its “Algo Confessions” series in Australia, marking the first time the initiative has been held outside the United States. The series features influencers and celebrities explaining how content is ranked and how users can manage their settings.
