Instagram creators targeted by fraudulent copyright extortion scams
Instagram creators are being targeted by scammers who exploit the platform’s automated copyright enforcement systems to launch extortion schemes. Scammers file fraudulent copyright claims against accounts, leading to temporary suspensions or demonetization. To resolve these issues quickly, some creators have resorted to paying cryptocurrency ransoms ranging from approximately $50 to hundreds of dollars via messaging apps like Telegram.
Victims report that paying the ransom often fails to stop the cycle, as new fraudulent claims frequently follow immediately after payment. Some creators have noted significant revenue losses while waiting weeks for Meta to process official appeals. While Meta states its systems are designed to protect users, creators have expressed frustration over the lack of effective support. Law enforcement agencies advise against paying ransoms, as doing so fuels the criminal ecosystem.
