Instagram introduces parental alerts for teen suicide-related searches

Instagram is expanding its protection features for teenagers by introducing a new notification system for parents in Indonesia. Through the parental supervision feature, parents who have activated account monitoring via the Family Center will receive alerts if their teenager repeatedly searches for terms related to suicide or self-harm within a short period.

The system is designed to detect patterns rather than single instances. Notifications are triggered only when search activity exceeds a specific threshold determined by digital behavior analysis and consultation with a Suicide and Self-Harm Advisory Group. These alerts can be sent via the app, email, SMS, or WhatsApp, depending on the contact information provided by the parent.

To assist with mental health support, the notifications include brief explanations of the searched terms and links to psychological guides. This initiative aims to help parents initiate sensitive conversations and provide necessary emotional support to their children.
