Instagram introduces Pixel effect for relationship soft launches
Instagram has introduced a new Pixel effect for Stories, allowing users to blur specific people or objects using text prompts. The feature is being positioned as a tool for “soft launching” relationships—a social media trend where users hint at a new partner without revealing their full identity.
Data from Tinder highlights the popularity of this behavior. In the United Kingdom, 26 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds prefer gradual reveals over big announcements. In the United States, 46 percent of single Gen Z social media users report soft-launching relationships, compared to 37 percent who prefer a “hard launch.”
While the feature offers a way to share moments while maintaining some privacy, it has sparked mixed reactions online regarding the implications of blurring a partner. Additionally, a 2024 survey of 1,000 Gen Z and millennial adults found that 45 percent choose not to share their relationships on social media at all, citing privacy as a primary reason.
