Meta expands Instagram parental alerts for teen self-harm searches

Meta has expanded its safety features for Instagram, introducing a new notification system in Japan and Vietnam designed to alert parents if their teenage children repeatedly search for terms related to suicide or self-harm within a short period.

When the system detects such patterns, notifications are sent to parents via email, SMS, WhatsApp, or in-app alerts. To assist with these sensitive situations, the notifications include expert resources and guidance to help parents initiate supportive conversations with their children.

While Instagram already blocks specific harmful search results and redirects users to support resources, this new layer of parental control aims to provide early warning signs of psychological distress. Meta stated that the threshold for these alerts was developed in consultation with suicide and self-harm advisory groups to balance safety with the prevention of excessive, non-critical notifications.
