Instagram outage hits users globally amid Jakarta student protests

On 12 June 2026, Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp experienced a service disruption that affected users worldwide. The outage coincided with student demonstrations at Jakarta’s Bundaran HI and was first reported by Indonesian netizens who could not upload stories, post comments or log in.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital confirmed the problem stemmed from a global issue in Meta’s platform infrastructure, not a localized incident. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone acknowledged the difficulty, said the company was working on a fix, and posted updates on X indicating that services were gradually recovering.

Downdetector recorded more than 62,000 reports of Facebook problems and over 8,000 reports for Instagram globally. Users in the Philippines, India, Australia, Canada, the United States and other regions also reported similar failures, confirming the outage’s international scope.
