Instagram to label AI-generated profiles and limit reach of undisclosed accounts
Instagram is updating its policies regarding artificial intelligence to improve transparency for its users. The platform will replace its existing ‘AI creator’ label with a more specific ‘AI-generated profile’ tag. This new designation is intended to clarify when a profile represents a synthetic identity rather than a real human being.
The label will be visible in user biographies, under usernames, and on specific posts or Reels. Instagram has stated that this change responds to user feedback from individuals who felt misled after discovering that accounts appearing to belong to real people were actually digital creations.
To enforce this, Instagram plans to limit the reach and visibility of accounts that feature AI-generated personas without using the required label. However, the policy does not target creators who use AI as a tool for editing photos, refining captions, or generating graphics. The restrictions apply specifically to accounts built around entirely synthetic identities.
