Institute for Blood Transfusion of Serbia appeals for urgent donations
The Institute for Blood Transfusion of Serbia has issued an urgent appeal for voluntary blood donations due to low supply levels. Mirjana Knežević, a representative of the Institute, noted that while no surgeries have been postponed yet, the current trend could lead to such measures if donations do not increase.
Currently, the Institute is collecting significantly fewer units than required for the smooth functioning of the healthcare system. While approximately 1,500 to 1,800 units are needed weekly, only about 1,000 units have been collected since the start of the week. On one recent day, only 80 units were collected, compared to the daily requirement of 300.
Blood donation drives are being organized at various locations across Serbia, including Bogatić and Belgrade's Stari Grad. Citizens can also donate daily at the Institute for Blood Transfusion of Serbia on Svetog Save Street. Eligible donors are healthy adults aged 18 to 65 who pass a medical examination and hemoglobin check.
