Institute of Cancer Research workers begin indefinite strike

More than 300 members of the Unite union at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) are engaged in an indefinite strike following the rejection of a 4 per cent pay offer. The industrial action, which is the first in the institute’s 117-year history, involves staff across scientific research, laboratory support, and site management.

Striking workers are seeking pay restoration of up to 16 per cent to address real-terms wage cuts experienced since 2019, as well as the reinstatement of an increment-based pay scale. Union representatives noted that many staff members earn close to the London Living Wage, while the institute maintains significant reserves.

ICR workers recently attended a solidarity meeting in Manchester to connect with other striking groups, including hospitality workers, NHS theatre staff, and transport workers. The meeting highlighted shared struggles regarding pay, union recognition, and job security across various sectors.
