Institutional investors drive crypto market growth

Institutional investors have become the primary force in cryptocurrency markets, shifting away from the retail-dominated landscape seen in 2021. According to Blockchain.com Co-CEO Lane Castleman, this transition is being fueled by clearer regulatory frameworks in the EU, UK, Asia, Africa, and the US, as well as the rise of tokenization.

Castleman noted that the digital asset sector is experiencing unprecedented bipartisan support in the US Congress. While the form of support may vary depending on political leadership, he expects continued momentum. He highlighted that over 30 rulemaking processes involving the SEC and CFTC have been underway, which are broadening consumer access and enabling tokenization, despite the stalling of the CLARITY Act.

However, regulatory fragmentation remains a challenge in the United States. The requirement for money transmitter licenses on a state-by-state basis creates a heavy burden for startups, whereas established firms are better equipped to manage these compliance costs. Castleman expressed hope for a federal solution to simplify nationwide operations.
