Institutional investors show mixed activity in BlackRock Bitcoin ETF

Institutional investment activity in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) showed divergent trends in recent SEC 13F filings.

Tudor Investment, led by Paul Tudor Jones, increased its direct holdings of IBIT by 18.9%, rising from 579,083 shares at the end of March to 688,529 shares by June 30. During the same period, the firm significantly reduced its call options, which fell by 85.2% from 998,000 to 148,000 shares on an underlying asset basis.

In contrast, Australian financial firm Macquarie Group significantly reduced its position in the same ETF. During the second quarter, Macquarie slashed its IBIT holdings by approximately 62%, bringing its position down to roughly 1.6 million shares valued between $53 million and $55 million. This follows a previous 19% reduction in the first quarter. The filings do not specify whether these reductions represent proprietary de-risking or client-driven redemptions.
