Instituto Albatroz and R3 Animal rescue and release of Magellanic penguins in Brazil

The non‑governmental organization Instituto Albatroz rescued 20 live Magellanic penguins that had stranded on the beaches of Cabo Frio, Búzios and Arraial do Cabo in the Rio de Janeiro region. The birds were taken to the institute’s rehabilitation and de‑petrolisation centre in Araruama as part of the PMP‑BC/ES beach‑monitoring project required by federal environmental licensing. Veterinary specialist Daphne Goldberg warned the public not to handle the animals, noting that stress can worsen their condition.

Separately, the association R3 Animal released a group of 15 rehabilitated penguins at Praia do Moçambique in Florianópolis, marking the first release of the season. The birds, rescued earlier after becoming exhausted and malnourished during their migration from Patagonia, underwent two months of veterinary care that included warming, hydration, feeding and swimming exercises before being deemed fit for the ocean.
