Instituto Cervantes receives Jorge Luis Borges and María Kodama legacy

The Instituto Cervantes in Madrid has received the legacy of Jorge Luis Borges and María Kodama. In collaboration with the Jorge Luis Borges Foundation and the City of Buenos Aires, the ceremony was led by Luis García Montero, director of the Cervantes Institute.

The event centered on the deposit of personal objects belonging to the author and his partner into the ‘Cajas de las Letras’ (Letter Boxes). This tradition, established in 2007, preserves items from significant Spanish-speaking creators in a facility that formerly housed the Banco Español del Río de la Plata. New additions to the collection include a tie and a camera belonging to Borges and Kodama.

In Córdoba, Argentina, a separate academic event titled ‘Borges y Quiroga: literatura, historia y épica caudillesca’ is scheduled for October 21. The lecture and recital will explore Borges’s literary fascination with the 19th-century Argentine caudillo Juan Facundo Quiroga, examining the nineteen instances where Borges incorporated the historical figure into his creative work.
