Instituto Cervantes set to reopen cultural centre in Gibraltar after barrier removal

Director Luis García Montero said the Instituto Cervantes has "everything prepared" and a budget line approved to reopen its Gibraltar centre for the next academic year. The centre, which operated from 2011 to 2014 and served over 4,500 students—mostly local Gibraltarians—was closed due to political disagreements. Its revival depends on approval from Spain’s Council of Ministers, the Presidency and the Foreign Ministry. The announcement was made at the annual meeting of Cervantes directors in Jerez, attended by Queen Letizia. The recent dismantling of the border fence (the "Verja") following the EU‑UK Gibraltar agreement has created a new opportunity for cultural dialogue between the Peninsula and the territory.
