Instituto de Salud Carlos III identifies primary school infections

A study by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), conducted across three Spanish hospitals, has identified the primary causes of gastrointestinal infections in young children within school environments.

Research indicates that norovirus is the most frequently detected gastrointestinal virus in children suffering from diarrhea. Often referred to as the ‘cruise ship virus’ due to its prevalence in crowded settings, norovirus spreads easily through person-to-person contact, contaminated surfaces, or food.

In addition to viral infections, the study highlights that parasitic causes such as Giardia or Cryptosporidium are common among young children. Bacterial infections, frequently linked to food poisoning, are often caused by Escherichia coli and Campylobacter.
