Instituto Santa Juliana faces risk of disappearance in Acre

The Instituto Santa Juliana, recognized as the oldest building in the state of Acre, faces the risk of disappearing due to long-term abandonment. Located in the central region of Sena Madureira, the historic site was founded in 1922 and officially inaugurated in 1923.

Originally managed by the Catholic Church and the Servas de Maria Reparadoras, the institute served as a home for orphaned girls from the Purus region rubber plantations and functioned as one of the first major formal education centers in the municipality. Over time, it transitioned into a state school through a partnership with the state government.

Despite being officially designated as a historical and cultural heritage site of Acre, the building has remained closed since school activities ceased in 2014. The lack of maintenance and the absence of revitalization plans have led to significant deterioration, causing concern among local residents as the city celebrates its 122nd anniversary.
