Instituto Tlaxcalteca de Elecciones releases affirmative‑action consultation results for priority groups

The Instituto Tlaxcalteca de Elecciones (ITE) presented the findings of consultations held between April and July with Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities and LGBTTTIA+ communities in Tlaxcala. A total of 531 participants responded – 154 Indigenous representatives, 227 persons with disability and 150 members of LGBTTTIA+ groups. ITE President Emmanuel Ávila González stressed that the next electoral process (2023‑2024) must apply affirmative‑action measures with clear rules, reliable competitive mechanisms and direct participation of the groups concerned. Participants highlighted specific needs: Ulises Vázquez Vázquez called for accessibility tools, Eduardo Arce Pérez emphasized indigenous leadership rooted in community knowledge, and Herman García Zárate urged societal responsibility to protect inclusion gains. The results will guide the design of affirmative‑action actions for the upcoming election, aiming to improve political representation of historically discriminated groups.

These consultative outcomes are intended to become a regular part of Tlaxcala’s electoral framework, ensuring that priority groups have genuine, democratic participation in decision‑making.
