Instituto Vladimir Herzog alerts UN to potential U.S. interference in Brazil elections

The Instituto Vladimir Herzog (IVH) has sent a letter to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warning of potential United States interference in Brazil’s 2026 electoral process. The document expresses concern regarding pressure on Brazilian institutions and the possibility that the Trump administration might contest the election results.

The IVH report aligns with warnings from the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), which has flagged movements related to American influence as being at a “critical level.” The intelligence agency has reportedly alerted the Planalto Palace, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), and the Ministry of Justice regarding these developments.

Specific concerns cited include diplomatic pressures, such as a list of 21 demands linked to tariff negotiations that included provisions for “political dissidents” to participate in elections. The letter also mentions meetings at the U.S. Consulate in São Paulo and potential use of foreign policy instruments to undermine Brazilian democracy. The IVH is calling on UN member states to recognize the 2026 election results regardless of the winner to prevent the fueling of disinformation and internal instability.
