Insulin resistance and myosteatosis linked to metabolic health risks

Medical experts are highlighting the connection between insulin resistance, myosteatosis, and the progression toward type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance occurs when cells in the muscle, liver, and fat tissue fail to respond properly to insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating blood glucose levels. If left unaddressed, this imbalance can lead to prediabetes and cardiovascular complications.

During the International Congress of Nutrition and Body Composition organized by the Universidad Autónoma del Noreste (UANE), clinical nutrition specialist Fernanda De la Peña discussed myosteatosis, a condition characterized by the silent accumulation of fat within the muscle. This asymptomatic condition is linked to cardiometabolic diseases and insulin resistance. Research over the last decade has also explored the relationship between myosteatosis and GLP-1 medications as potential therapeutic approaches.
