Insurance and Financial Advice Sectors Face Talent and Knowledge Gaps

The insurance industry is confronting a dual challenge of a shrinking workforce and a loss of institutional knowledge as veteran professionals retire. Advocates such as Jason Rodriguez, owner of Prominent Insurance Agency, argue that intentional mentorship programs can bridge the gap, citing a Gallup study where 48% of participants reported higher job satisfaction. Selective’s vice‑president of distribution strategies, Robert Redden, adds that mentorship also offers fresh perspectives for mentors.

A parallel issue is emerging in the financial‑advice profession. Padua Wealth Data’s Australian Financial Adviser Market report shows that, as of July 2026, 39.9% of advisers have 20 + years experience while only 13.1% have under five years. Early‑career attrition has reduced the 0‑to‑4‑year cohort from about 8,400 in 2019 to 667 in 2023, with a modest rebound to 1,973 in 2026. The report warns that the pipeline of new advisers remains insufficient to offset the aging senior cohort, highlighting the need for strategies such as mentorship to retain emerging talent.
