Insurance and online fraud trends reported in Italy

An investigation by Facile.it, EMG, and mUp Research has revealed significant insurance fraud in Italy. Approximately 1.4 million motorists have reportedly lied to insurance companies, while 890,000 drivers have fallen victim to fraud or attempted fraud, resulting in estimated losses exceeding 390 million euros. Common deceptive practices include altering accident dynamics to avoid premium increases and misrepresenting driver identities to cover unauthorized users.

Separately, data from the 2025 Sole 24 Ore Crime Report highlights a high prevalence of online scams in the Marche region. Reports indicate approximately 2,438.7 complaints for cybercrimes per 100,000 inhabitants. In response, the Order of Engineers of the Province of Ancona is launching digital literacy initiatives through the Digitalmeet project to help citizens recognize phishing, fake banking communications, and other digital threats.
