Insurance considerations for adoptive parents in Germany

Following an adoption decree from a family court, parents are advised to review various insurance protections to ensure their new family members are adequately covered. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 3,517 children were adopted last year in Germany.

In terms of health insurance, children can be included in statutory family insurance. For private health insurance, special advantages may be available if a minor child is insured within two months of the adoption. Accident insurance often allows for contribution-free registration during the initial months through parental precautionary insurance.

Parents should also ensure that liability insurance includes family coverage. Additionally, existing occupational disability and risk life insurance policies may allow for increased coverage through post-insurance guarantees, often without requiring new health examinations, provided specific deadlines are met. Finally, household contents insurance should be reviewed to ensure the coverage sum remains sufficient after adding new items for the child.
