Insurance guidance for students starting university

As the new university semester approaches in October, students are advised to review their insurance coverage to avoid unexpected financial burdens. According to the Bund der Versicherten (BdV), several types of insurance are critical.

Health insurance is mandatory. Students can often remain covered under their parents' family insurance until the age of 25, provided their regular total income does not exceed 565 euros in 2026. For those with income solely from marginal employment, the limit is 603 euros. If parents have private health insurance or if student income exceeds these limits, students must secure their own coverage through private health insurance or the statutory health insurance for students (KVdS).

Personal liability insurance is also essential to protect against financial consequences for damages caused to others. While many students are covered under their parents' policies during initial training, coverage may change if the student moves or reaches certain age limits. Students who have already completed a degree or are not immediately transitioning from a Bachelor's to a Master's program may require their own individual contracts.
